Challenge #27, Operation Write Home & New Release

This week's challenge here at Meljen's Designs is a SPECIAL ONE!!!!!
We are showcasing Operation Write Home!

Operation Write Home is a 501(c)(3) organization that sends blank handmade greeting cards for all occasions to deployed service members to write home on. They’ve mailed well over 500,000 cards so far—and are still going strong! Our very own design team member, Sandy, is the president and founder of this organization, known also as OWH. (Which means a lot of our Meljen's Designs images have been on cards sent overseas for heroes to write home on!)  See below a little bit of info about OWH and how you can support it, too!

Please read the basic card guidelines here; the short version is this:
  1. Remember that glitter is NOT allowed (it’s a safety hazard to our heroes)
  2. Handmade cards only
  3. Send general and holiday themes - birthday, love, miss you, thinking of you, etc. as well as Christmas! (Halloween and Thanksgiving deadlines are over.)
  4. OWH needs A2 sized cards. Envelopes are a big help, especially when cards are properly tucked!
  5. “Operation Write Home” needs to be on the backs of your cards—it can be stamped, handwritten, or printed on labels.
  6. Please include a packing slip inside your box or envelope, and mail them to any of their shippers listed on the Mailroom page. In your package, you can also include notes written to encourage and thank a deployed service member.

Operation Write Home is such a special organization and so dear to many of our hearts!

Melissa supports this cause in memory of her father, Keith, who bravely served his country from 1969-1971, earning the Purple Heart* in the Vietnam War.  Melissa has created a beautiful blog, honoring her Father with stories and memories of his life.  You are welcome to visit and learn more about this amazing man.

I also come from a long line of Military Heroes, which makes Operation Write Home hit close to home for me.  I was raised an Army Brat.  My Father served our country for 28 1/2 years.  He also served in Vietnam (during the same years as Melissa's Dad) as a Combat Medic.  My Mother served in the Army for 2 years, before she decided to start a family after meeting my Dad.  Both of my Grandfathers were Career Military and both of my Uncles also served our country.  My Dad's brother, my Uncle Bruce, served in Desert Storm in the 1990's.  My Mom recalls being so young when my Dad was in Vietnam, before email and computers.  She recalls the long silences between "phone" calls that were always monitored and timed.  Letters from home were really the only way to communicate with loved ones, if only we had an organization like this all those years ago!

Callie also has very proud Military roots in her family.  Both of her Grandfathers were war Veterans.  Her Grandpa Baldus served in WWII and came home to his loving family.  Her Grandpa Cherry was an Air Force pilot in Korea and was declared POW.  They found parts of his plane, but he sadly never made it home.

For those who have fought for it, Freedom has taste the protected will never know.

I would like to say Thank You to those who have, do or will fight to protect us!

So, now you know we are promoting OWH this week.....

Here are our NEW RELEASE images!!!
