Candace's First Card

Hi everyone!!

It's Candace here! Today I am sharing one of my very first Meljen's Designs cards using Fancy Little Teapot. This cards has always been a favorite of mine. I just love this teapot image combined with the pretty papers! I especially love the touch of black because it helps the image to pop a little!

I also want to give you a little tip today about adding sentiments to your images. That's the awesome thing about digis - you can resize them, merge them with other digis, and even add your own sentiments! I opened this image up in Photoshop. I normally print my images out by simply using Microsoft Word, but since I wanted to edit the image itself, I needed to use a photo-editing program. I chose a font and typed "thinking of you" and centered it underneath the teapot image. Then, I saved it under a new name. Next, I just printed it out like normal, colored it up, and added it to my card.

I hope this gives you some ideas on creative ways you can use digi images!
Have a great day!

Using Recycled or "RePurposed" Materials

Good morning everyone! It's Marlena here and today is my turn to post a project for all of you.  I thought I would show you how I make my journals using recycled materials, right from my own kitchen.  I've begun saving our cereal and snack boxes to use as the covers for my art journals.  Even though they are made from a light cardboard material, they really stiffen up after I cover them with my card stock, or patterned  paper, and glue.  Then, I just bind them together on my Cinch, embellish and I'm all done.  It really does save in materials cost, which leaves more money for other craft supplies, like Melissa's fabby digital stamps!

Here's a picture of some of the materials I used for my journal.

For the inside of my journals I have started using watercolor paper.  I use this paper because it is thick and if used as an art journal it can hold mixed mediums.  Also, the journal could be used for drawing, writing, or whatever a person likes.  It really is pretty versatile.  My recycled cardboard is a Cinnamon Toast Crunch box, one of my daughter's favorite cereals!

Here's what the journal looked like when it was completely put together.

If you want to know a little more about the various materials I used you can click HERE to visit my blog.  I'm posting this project there as well, with a complete list of materials.

I hope you enjoyed seeing how I used recycled materials for my project.  Until next time...............

Clean And Simple

Hi there It's my day to share with you again. Today I am sharing a Clean & Simple (CAS)  card. I love CAS cards and that is pretty much my style. Some have a hard time making a CAS card but for me it just comes easy here are a few things to remember when making a Clean & Simple card

It's all about the design.
* not the technique
* not the tools
* not the embellishments

It's all about the design.
* Uncluttered
* lots of white or open space
* one main focal point

It's all about the design.
I used this sweet Little Bug Line to create my CAS card. The sentiment is a rub-on

How to Choose Colors When Creating a Card

The basic use of color can take your card from tame to amazing. Using a color wheel can help you choose colors that will work together in harmony. It will also allow you to add that pop of color to accent your image.
This is a color wheel. Complementary colors are a safe bet. Purple and yellow, red and green, blue and orange. They are all opposite from eachother on the color wheel and will bring out the best in eachother when placed together.
Image: Autumn Flower Mouse This is why a card done in pink and green work well together. They are complementary. To richen your card it is nice to have several different shades of the colors that you are using in your card. You can achieve this by using design paper, card stock, or in the coloring of your image.
Image: Turtle's Little Star This card works as well because of complementary colors. I chose blue and orange, which are opposite on the color wheel. I did add green as a pop of color to make sure that the tutle image became the focal point. The green is analogous, which means the color next to the color blue on the color wheel. My first point of attack is to choose two colors that are complementary and then add in a third color in my image. When you start to feel more comfortable with color theory you can choose colors that are analogous and then add in a complementary color. It is important that you take in to account the intensity of the colors used. If you choose all vibrant strong colors, your image may be overwhelmed. If you choose all soft colors your image may blend into the background. You can also try a monocromatic card, or a card of all one color with different intensties of the same color.
Image: Fuzzy Little Hamster I chose a neutral color, brown, to add to my monocromatic card. Neutral colors work with most all colors, they include black, white, grey and brown. Mixing color can take your projects to a whole new level. Take time to get familiar with the color wheel. This can be one of your best tools when trying to plan a card with pop! When you create with color you have the ability to highlight your image and any special details of your card, turning it from tame to amazing!

Creating With Word Art

Meljen’s Designs has so many cute and adorable images, but do you know that there is a fabulous selection of Word Art too?  What is even better,  you'll find a lot of Word Art images in the Dollar Digi portion of the store.  Sometimes, when I don’t have time to color a full image, I whip up a quick card using one of the Word Art sentiments. It makes for a great card, and all you have to do is outline some of the words in the image.

As you see in my card using "When Life Gives You Lemons", I highlighted two of the words, and some of the swirls, then did a quick coloring of the lemons and lemonade. It maybe took me only a few moments to do! I added some cute ribbon, a punched trim and sweet bee embellishments. I only used a single patterned paper, and mounted it to a black panel, then to a white card! My card was done in less than 10 minutes!!

So take a moment to look through the Word Art and Dollar Digi sections at Meljen’s Design store, and you’ll find time for a lot more cards in your busy life!!

It's an Alien Party

Hey everyone, Jessica here. I am so excited to posting and sharing with you today. I have spent the last few days planning my youngest son's 5th birthday party. The idea for the party all started with a picture of a cake from last month's issue of Disney Family Fun magazine.

Now AJ thought that this was the COOLEST cake ever and so the whole theme for the party revolved around the alien cake. Now in addition to coming up with fun activities and games I  had to come up with an idea for the party invites. Of course the first thing that came to my mind was the Alien and Monster release from last  September. I asked AJ which image he wanted me to use on the invites and he chose Squiggy the Alien

So now my task was to come up with something simple yet fun for a 5th birthday party. I found a fun paper pack that I got at the Dollar Tree (surprising I know) and the rest went together so easily. AJ had me make pink papered invites to go to the girls and the blue for boys. It was so fun to have him sitting at my desk with me while I made these for him. He made all the decisions for me. He chose the papers, the sentiment and the
markers I used to color the image.

Now all I have to do is print up some of these in big scale for coloring pages for the kids to take home in their goodie bags.

I hope you all have a great day and I'll be back with you next month to share my oldest son's birthday invites (as long as he doesn't go all crazy with the theme).

Worth a Thousand Words ...

A picture, it is said, is worth a thousand words, but cannot a few well-spoken words convey as many pictures?  ~Author Unknown

I love finding just the right quotation to accompany one of Melissa's Wonderful Images. I can sit forever sifting through quotes on a topic that relates to the image I am working with till I find the one that 'speaks to me'.   A Few examples ...

The quote for this card using the image Makeup Brush was found by simply doing an internet search for "cosmetic quotes". I nearly died laughing when I found this one....so true, so true.

A search for 'Apple Pie Quotes' to accompany the image Hot Apple Pie resulted in this sentiment:

A search for 'Art Quotes' to go with Artist Bear resulted in:

Lastly, Sometimes I see an image and it sparks a memory of a favorite quotation as Teacup Mouse did:

In closing I will leave you with this thought that I found after a search for 'quotes about quotes'

I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.  ~Marlene Dietrich

1 Digital Stamp=4 Different Looks

The other day I was browsing Meljen's Designs Shop and found this image:
Spring Bunny Trinkets
I thought it would perfect for a project I was working on. A friend asked if I'd make her 4 "Thank You" cards. Her daughter had recently shown a bunny at our local 4 H show, so I knew this one would work perfectly!
So I got to printing, coloring and picking out paper. And this is what I got:

Four quick cards from 1 super cute image!
Thanks for stopping by today!
Have a wonderful Friday!
